_ HOUSE BAND

John Roney (piano)
Fred Alarie (bass)
Vincent P. Ravary (drums)

A longstanding jazz tradition, the late show features the house band, right after the main show, in a less formal context.

The house band starts the party, and all musicians in the room are then invited to participate in the jam session until the sun rises (almost!).

Accessibility _ The venue at 3716 Notre-Dame is located in the basement. The stairs might make the room difficult to access for people with mobility issues.

  • Pianist John Roney is one of the most active and visible artists on the Canadian music scene. A composer, jazz and classical pianist, his versatility indicates a mastery of an astonishing plurality of artistic skills and sensibilities. After graduating from the University of Toronto with a B.A. in jazz piano, classical piano and composition, he moved to Montreal to complete his M.A. in jazz piano at MC Gill University.

Since his arrival in Montreal, John has had the opportunity to play with many of the big names in the local jazz scene such as Chet Doxas, Remi Bolduc, Effendi Jazzlab, Bernard Primeau and Jean-Christophe Béney. These collaborations have led him to play across Canada, Europe and the Middle East and to participate in numerous recordings for CBC/Radio-Canada, Global Television, JustinTime Records, Effendi Records and Swingin'Time Productions. His work with soprano Nathalie Choquette has taken him around the world (Canada, Japan, China, Europe and West Africa).

He has also performed or recorded with such renowned artists as Peter Erskine and Steve Houghton, bassists Christian McBride and Alain Caron, composers Johnny Mandel, Gary Kulesha and Alf Clausen, Belgian guitarist Phillipe Catherine, and saxophonists Seamus Blake, Nick Brignola, François Théberge, Michael Blake, Jerry Bergonzi and Donny McCaslin. As a composer, John has scored music for orchestras and chamber ensembles in Ontario and Quebec, and has written for radio, film, television and theatre productions. He has worked on transcriptions and arrangements of "The Triplets of Belleville" (music by Benoît Charest), "Houdini" and various productions for soprano Natalie Choquette.
