The Saint-Henri Jazz Society (SJSH) was created to keep jazz alive in and around Saint-Henri.

Because we believe jazz music can build bridges amongst musicians, make neighbours come together and connect the past with the present.

Why Saint-Henri?

Why not Little Burgundy? After all, that’s where all the greatest jazz clubs were established.

Although masters like Oscar Peterson, Daisy Peterson Sweeney and Oliver Jones learned their craft in Little Burgundy, some of them actually grew up in Saint-Henri.

Back in the days, everyone referred to the space all the way up to Rue de la Montagne as Saint-Henri. The name Little Burgundy only appeared after the first massive “revitalization” of the neighborhood in the 1960’s, which resulted in the exodus of Black communities.

Today’s Saint-Henri is home to an important community of musicians. A nod to the old neighborhood, a small sign of solidarity with history, our name humbly expresses a renewed vision for jazz in Montreal.

As much as we like playing in the streets of Saint-Henri, we are proud to offer musicians a roof under which they can jam, perform and be heard throughout the year.
